The days of the wild partying Aussies, Brits and other Westerners with all their wallets full of cash ready to spend at Bali bars, may be numbered. With the rise in influence of the Islamist parties, now with solid majorities in parliament, the tourism industry may fall prey to the demands of Sharia.

The Canberratimes.com.au reports, "Fears for bali over partys push to ban alcohol":

Indonesia will consider banning all alcohol and putting drinkers in jail for up to two years.

The ban, which would decimate the night life in tourist haven Bali, has been proposed and listed on Indonesia's national parliamentary legislative agenda for next year.

The Bill for a Ban on Alcoholic Drinks was drafted by the predominantly Islamic United Development Party, a member of the President, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's, governing coalition.

Those who produce alcoholic drinks would be subject to penalties of up to 10 years in prison and Rupiah10 billion ($1 million) in fines; there would be $520,000 in fines and five years in prison for those who distribute them, and two years' imprisonment and a $20,800 fine for those who consume alcohol.
Yes, you read that right. Up to 10 years in prison for the crime of producing alcohol. Of course, that would mean the end of the Indonesian beer industry. Indonesian brands Multi Bintang and Bir Bintang for example, are considered some of the finest of brews worldwide. And the beer industry employes 10s of thousands in its factories. But the ban presumably, would also apply to any home beer brewers.

"Courageous decision to renounce his citizenship in protest of overtaxation"

Excerpted, The Objectivist Standard, "Depardieu Justly Condemns France’s Theft by Taxation, by Ari Armstrong":French actor Gérard Depardieu justly condemned his nation’s 75 percent marginal tax rate, explaining that, in France, “success, creation, talent—difference, in fact—must be punished.” Depardieu renounced his French citizenship and moved to Belgium, where taxes are lower.

Although various French politicians and commentators have harshly criticized Depardieu, the actor deserves praise for his courageous decision to renounce his citizenship in protest of France’s obscene tax rates. Depardieu has produced an extraordinary body of work (IMDB lists his 194 titles) including a version of Cyrano de Bergerac; he has created great wealth in the process; and he has a moral right to keep the product of his effort and to use it as he sees fit.

Note from the editor - Depardieu recently relocated to Belgium on the border to avoid the 75% tax on income.

From the Local (Swiss News in English) "SVP piles on the pressure over foreign criminals":

The party has brought forward a new popular initiative, signed by 154,982 people, calling on the government to honour the result of a referendum held in November 2010, newspaper 20 Minutes reports. In that vote, 53 percent of voters backed the compulsory expulsion of foreigners who had committed crimes in Switzerland.

The SVP accuses the government, which is obliged to implement the measures, of dragging its feet.

The government put two detailed proposals forward in May, but both of these were significantly more lenient than the original proposals - something the government said was necessary to make them compatible with international law.

The new initiative is far more detailed than the original, and if passed would give the government less room for manoeuvre. The text specifies that expulsion of foreigners who committed murder, robbery or rape would be automatic, even on a first offence.

From Eric Dondero:

The London Daily Mail reports that with the new year, comes a slew of new rules and regulations designed to annoy us, nit-pick us to death, waste our time and take more money out of our wallets.

The problem is particularly accute in Australia where:a raft of 2013 laws being introduced in the country that critics say are unnecessary 'nannyism'.

Parents have been told not to wear revealing clothes such as bikinis or racist T-shirts.

In Victoria, smokers will be fined £89 ($140) if they light up within 164 feet of the beach and in New South Wales a smoke-free radius will be installed around parks.

A ban on tanning salons will also come into force in the state from today. But then there's this from South Australia:

[complete ban on Ladies Night promotions goes into effect] Terry O'Gormon, president of The Australian Council for Civil Liberties, told The Australian that laws are already in place to prevent drunk people being served more alcohol in bars.

He said: 'If there is a problem, it lies with the enforcement.

Under the new alcohol laws, bars must offer free water to customers.

However many bars are expected to include men in their promotions to sidestep the ban.

The manager of PJ O'Briens bar in Adelaide told The Telegraph: 'As long as you offer the special deals to everyone, it is OK.

'We will still look after everyone. Everything we're doing is by the book.'

In the increasingly racist and ignorant United States, people are not even embarrassed to blurt out such nonsense as is a person "too white" to represent South Africa in the Miss Universe pageant. But, when Melinda Bam walked across the stage at Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, there she was, in all her whiteness, and thence it came, all the racist and ignorant remarks in the social media.

(See  channel24.co.za "Why is Miss South Africa white")

The whites of South Africa consists of two distinct groups: the Afrikaners and the English. The Afrikaners first began arriving in the 16th century, soon after blacks began arriving in this country.

The English began arriving a bit later. The whites of South Africa are therefore as genuinely African as the blacks of the United States are genuinely America. The two groups together constitute about 9 percent of the population.

During the post-apartheid period, these white are being increasingly subjected to violence both by hooligans and the police, so that today thousands are killed, tortured and raped. The prospect of South Africa transitioning to a pluralistic, multi-racial, multi-ethnic, multi-party democratic country, as exemplified in the recent movie "Invictus," seems at risk. Nevertheless, there still are many South Africans who hold to the ideal.
